Where Classroom Knowledge Becomes Clinical Habit
Every student in the Medical Assistant program at California Career Institute completes a 200-hour supervised externship at an approved healthcare facility. It is the stage of the program where skills practiced in the lab are applied in a working medical environment.
Progress is formally evaluated at the 100-hour and 200-hour intervals, so students receive structured feedback on their clinical performance rather than a single assessment at the end.
Skills Students Practice During Externship
- Patient reception and office safety

Four Areas of Focus
Clinical readiness. Students build the technical skills and professional habits expected in a medical office setting.
Patient care and safety. The externship reinforces vital signs, specimen collection, and clear patient communication.
Front and back office workflow. Medical assisting is a dual role, so students strengthen insurance, billing, and recordkeeping skills alongside their clinical duties.
Documentation and professional practice. Students practice clear communication, accurate documentation, and professional conduct within the healthcare setting.
Placements Across Orange County and Los Angeles
Externship placements are arranged at local clinics and healthcare facilities near CCI’s Anaheim and Hawthorne campuses. Medical assistants are commonly employed in offices of physicians, hospitals, and outpatient care centers, with additional opportunities in chiropractic offices, clinics, and urgent care — and the externship is often a student’s first extended exposure to that environment.

Preparing for the Placement
The externship follows seven core modules and a professional development module covering law and ethics, pharmacology and surgical procedures, front office and medical insurance, EKG and phlebotomy, and clinical procedures. By the time students reach their placement, they have already practiced these skills in a supervised on-campus skills lab.
